Benefits of the ancient practice of hair oiling

Hair oiling is an ancient Ayurvedic ritual, practiced to nourish the hair, enhance mental clarity and improve overall health and wellbeing. Overtime, the tradition has been adopted by many cultures and today a diverse range of oils are used, depending on the hair type, desired results and availability of ingredients.

When it comes to caring for the hair, some key benefits of hair oiling include:

  • Hydrating and fortifying dry and damaged mid-lengths and ends
  • Stimulating circulation in the scalp and follicular health, through massage application techniques
  • Strengthening the hair shaft
  • Promoting healthy new hair growth.

It is an incredibly beneficial addition to our modern hair care routines, however, like all ancient traditions living a new life on social media, the gentle and sparing nature of a healthy hair oiling practice has been overshadowed by heavier application techniques that can lead to problematic outcomes like greasy hair and scalp congestion.

To get the greatest benefits from your hair oiling routine, we recommend:

  • Applying the oil sparingly to both the scalp and lengths of the hair as the ingredients are powerful in a small amounts
  • Spending a few minutes gently massaging the scalp with your fingers or a massaging tool to help the oil penetrate and stimulate circulation – you don’t need to massage too firmly to get the benefits
  • For a scalp and hair treatment, once a week is the perfect frequency, leaving the oil on for a couple of hours to overnight if your hair is dry and brittle, but no longer
  • Thoroughly washing the hair after use to remove residue
  • Using just a few drops of oil warmed in your palms prior application to hydrate strands between washes and after styling as needed
  • Sleeping on a silk pillowcase or in a silk cap to prevent breakage
  • Brushing and combing with extreme care starting at the ends when hair is both wet and dry
  • Styling hair loosely rather than slicking it back in a tight style that can lead to hair loss over time.

“ I became devoted to hair oiling when my hair growth slowed as I approached my forties. Initially, it was a wonderfully aromatic and relaxing ritual that left my hair soft and improved its manageability and shine, but after a year or so is when the real magic happened. My new growth was stronger, and less breakage meant that I was retaining both length and thickness. I thought Circe would just be a blend for me to use at home but later felt compelled to share it as I know so many people looking to improve the quality of their hair at a range of life stages.” (Gemma Nicholas-Brennan – Founder)

Our Circe Hair oil is an invigorating and intensely hydrating treatment oil that stimulates scalp circulation, supports new growth and follicular health, and deeply nourishes each strand. It contains a blend of hydrating yet lightweight oils to nourish the existing hair including argan, jojoba, avocado and sweet almond, as well as aloe vera and meadowfoam oils to encourage scalp health. Ancient Ayurvedic powerhouse, false daisy, used for thousands of years to promote growth and overall hair health and the trio of circulation boosting rosemary, ginger and peppermint oils supercharge this formula.
